Corruption In The Family

Mar 23, 2017

There is a growing worldwide concern over corruption at the present time. Several factors are responsible for this malady. A consensus has now been reached that corruption is universal. It exists in all countries, both developed and developing, in the public and private sectors, as well as in non profit and charitable organizations.

Allegations and charges of corruption now play a more central role in the family at any time. This is because it is the individuals that make up the society and these individuals come from a family. Once a family is corrupt, society must be affected because it is individuals that make up society.      There is no globally accepted definition of corruption. In philosophical, theological and moral discussions, corruption is the abuse of bestowed power or position to acquire a personal benefit.

According to the Oxford Advanced Dictionary, corruption is the act or the effect of making somebody change from moral to immoral standards of behavior. This act of corruption is largely affected by the individuals existing in the society.

A family can be best described as a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity or co-residence. In most societies, it is the principal institutions for the socialization of children. In simple words, family consists of people who look after us, plays an essential role in our upbringing and teaches us the lessons in life that can never be learnt in any school or textbooks. The family is founded on the free choice of spouses to unite themselves

The family is a place where people living together with happiness love each other, every body is recognized, accepted and respected. Family brings out the best and the worse in each other. The family is the environment where people understand their religion, values, culture, society and utilize them to the best while coping with the outside world.

A family is where you meet your parents, grandparents, siblings and other family members. The family is a community of persons where moral values are taught and where the spiritual and cultural heritage of the society is assed on.

The family is also essential in ensuring that people are strong in commitments and promote both social responsibility and solidarity.

Factors that bring corruption into the family

Lack Of Parental Responsibility: Corruption in the family system emanates due to lack of parental responsibilities. Parents are the tool for family building and failure to carry out their parental task results to disintegration in the family thereby allowing children to behave anyhow they like.

Lack of proper parental responsibilities which involves teaching their children proper code of conduct and manners will enhance corruption because children will see their inadequate acts as a proper mode of behavior. In an ideal and intact family structure where the father and the mother (husband and wife) play their roles as expected and where there is a genuine cooperation and congenial relationship among the members of the family, the children will genuinely perform well in their moral engagements and general development. In families where the husbands and wives are not in good accord or always in disagreement, there will be little or no attention to the children and this will definitely affect their moral performance adversely.

Lack Of Proper Education: Ineffective or inadequate parental assistance may lead a child to feel overwhelmed, and consequently to withdraw from school. Researchers on status attachment have shown that high educational aspirations in children and that this aspiration accounts for a significant part of the fathers and sons educational attainment. Lack of proper education leads to abnormal behavior in children. It can equally amount to criminal acts like robbery, raping of young girls etc.

Selfishness: The obtains where one of the family members is always looking for his own personal needs and wants. These personal needs detached him from carrying out his parental functions. Owing to his quest for wealth, he hardly has time to look after the children God has given to him. He goes out in the morning and comes late at night. He pays less attention on family development and growth, always interested on what will yield him money. This selfish act makes his children to follow bad company, where they will learn all sorts of bad manner. Because of his quest for wealth, he does not notice the ill-mannered behavior of his children. This will not only affect his family but the society at large because the children will grow up under bad influence.

Bad Influence: Due to the processes on human growth, one passes through many processes as he grows up, beginning from nursery to university level. During these processes, one encounters many personalities and when not guided in life, can easily be influenced negatively. This can be seen in families where parents fight in the presence on their children. This can be witnessed also when parents live immoral lifestyles before their children. A child that grows up under such influence can never produce anything meaningful to the society. It is either he becomes a motor tout or a dangerous criminal in the society. This influence constitutes corruption to the family when he marries.

Negligence Of Family Prayer: “A family that prays together stays together.” Prayer is the way we communicate to God. Prayer unites the family. A prayerful family is a happy family, while a prayerless   family is doomed. Avoidance of family prayer paves the way for the devil to come and manipulate the family thereby taking control of the family.

Avoidance of family prayer dethatches the family from God's blessings and favors; the family will continue to be in difficulty and this will constitute nuisance to the community.

During his recent papal pastoral visit to the United States, in his address, the Holy Father acknowledged in the U.S. Congress that “the true essence of family is being threatened” and having identified that there are too many obstacles that militate against the family, we should also fight against these factors that threaten the true nature of the family and more so, we should emulate and imitate the family of 'Jesus, Mary and Joseph' who remains the best family in both physical(earthly life), moral life and spirituality and in doing so, our families will experience God's divine graces, then the family, the state, the country and the whole world will be a better place to live in and to the glory of God.
